church, melodrama partner for
girls night out

JUNE 26, 2009

Lee’s Summit Community Church is partnering with Martin City Melodrama & Vaudeville Co. to bring the theater’s act to town for the church’s annual Girls Night Out event.

The live show and dinner, which cost $10, is from 6:30-9 p.m. on Thursday, July 16 at the church, 1440 S.W. Jefferson St. The event is open to all women.

The evening will include the melodrama’s complete vaudeville act, including scenery, costumes and props. The fast-paced and energetic show features original music, improvisation, skits updated from original early 1900s-era scripts, and, yes, chin balancing.

“We invite all women in our community to step back in time with us, relax, laugh and enjoy the wholesome entertainment of this terrific theater company,” said Brenda Burnes, the church’s director of Women’s Ministry.

Desserts, salad and the show are included in the ticket price. Purchase tickets online or at the church office until Friday, July 10. For more information, call the church office at 524.6786.

The Martin City Melodrama and Vaudeville Co. is working closely with the city of Lee’s Summit and the Economic Development Council to relocate from Overland Park, Kan., to Arnold Hall at 123 E. Third St. If approved, the theater company will transform the building into a visual and performing arts center with refurbished space for community events and anchor a family-friendly cultural arts district in downtown Lee’s Summit. However, the July 16 performance is at the church, not Arnold Hall.
