CHURCH DONATES 1,000 GIFT BOXES TO NEEDY CHILDREN

DECEMBER 2, 2004

Lee’s Summit Community Church volunteers purchased and packaged 1,043 Christmas gift boxes for needy children throughout the world.

Hundreds of church families participated in Operation Christmas Child, which delivers gifts to impoverished children, including orphans. Volunteers designated each shoe-box-sized package for a boy or a girl and filled them with toys and practical items such as toothbrushes and school supplies. Volunteers also donated funds to ship the packages, many of which are headed to remote destinations such as Africa or Asia.

The boxes also contain literature explaining the true, spiritual meaning of Christmas surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. The goal of Operation Christmas Child is to meet small, practical needs of children. More importantly, it lets them know that they are special and are loved by God and people around the globe.
Lead Pastor Doug Brown challenged the congregation to be generous and consider children throughout the world.

“We’re heartened by the response of the church to consider others,” said Brown. “It’s so easy to get caught up in the rush of the Christmas season. Christmas reminds us of the gift of God’s son and God’s generosity toward us. This motivates us to be generous to others not only at Christmas time, but year round.”
