CHURCH TEAM TOUCHES LIVES IN STORM-DAMAGED MISSISSIPPI

OCT. 26, 2005

A team from Lee’s Summit Community Church recently returned from assisting victims of Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi.

From Oct. 8-15, the group of six served the city of Laurel, Miss., which was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. By the time the team arrived, large trees had been moved off of houses and cars but were still lying in yards throughout the community.

The team used chain saws and elbow grease to clean up 16 yards. Most of the property owners were widows and senior citizens who couldn’t have done the work themselves.

“Many of these people cried tears of gratefulness and appreciation and told us the work we did for them would have cost them thousands of dollars,” says Tim Luke, the church’s director of Equip Ministries and the leader of the trip.

LSCC partnered with West Laurel Baptist Church, which helped supply volunteers and equipment for the entire week.

“Our team had diverse talents and it was remarkable to see how well we gelled together to serve God and others and to get a great deal of work done,” Luke says.

The church, at 1440 S.W. Jefferson (www.lscckc.org), is sending another team of about 40 students and adults to Biloxi, Miss., on Oct. 28 to further assist with recovery efforts.
