Children will combine knowledge with action when they assemble stuffed bears destined for Africa as part of Lee's Summit Community Church's Vacation Bible School the week of June 25-29.
About 500 children are expected to attend, and each one will complete construction of two fleece teddy bears - one to ship to a needy child in Africa and one to keep.
Why not send both bears?
"It's not that the children doing this project need another stuffed animal," says Patty McWilliams, director of Vacation Bible School. "Keeping one 'prayer bear' will serve as a reminder of God's love for the whole world - for people of all colors and cultures. The kids who put these bears together will gain a sense of connection to a child they may never see, but can still care about and pray for."
Another goal of the project is to give children around the world a simple and practical reminder of God's love.
Funding for the kits has been provided through donations of about $2,000 from members of Lee's Summit Community Church. In addition to purchasing the kits for the bears, the funds pay for postage and Christian literature included in each package. The church, at 1440 S.W. Jefferson, has nearly reached its goal of raising enough funds to send 500 bears overseas.
Vacation Bible School is free and open to children who are entering kindergarten through sixth grade this fall. The schedule is from 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday, June 25-29. The theme of "Avalanche Ranch" includes games, compelling storytelling, crafts and music. For more information, visit the church's Web site at www.lscckc.org.
