WHY SHOULD I TRUST THE BIBLE?

It’s interesting to note how many dictators and even religious leaders throughout history have tried to ban the Bible. In our own day and age, religious extremists and Marxist authoritarians actively confiscate Bibles and destroy them.

Why is this book so dangerous that it has been burned and confiscated throughout the ages?

The world’s all-time bestseller contains the dangerous idea that its pages were inspired by God, who used human authors to convey its message. It contains the radical ideas that God exists, created us and loves us. We matter to Him, and He wants us to know Him in a personal way.

It claims to be a book inspired by God that speaks for God.

“All Scripture is inspired by God,” says the Bible in 2 Timothy 3:16. A more literal translation renders it this way: “All Scripture is God-breathed.”

But can we trust it?

We can trust that the Bible we read today is reliable when compared to the original writings (penned thousands of years ago) for several reasons.

First of all, our Bible is supported by an overwhelming amount of manuscript evidence. Thousands of ancient documents testify to the fact that the Bible we have is the same one written by authors shortly after the time of Christ. Of course, part of the Bible, the Old Testament, was written before the time of Christ. Impressive manuscript evidence, including the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, also supports the integrity of the Bible.

Archaeological findings have also validated numerous dates, names and places in the Bible. It’s obvious from these findings that the writers of the Bible were serious biographers and careful about their documentation. This was never meant to be a work of fiction.

The internal consistency of the Bible is also a testimony to its uniqueness. Although the Bible was written over a period of centuries by diverse authors – many of whom never met – it conveys the solitary theme of God’s love and care for mankind through thick and thin.

Another unique characteristic of the Bible is its candor. It presents spiritual leaders ranging from King David to Saint Peter with brutal honesty. It chronicles their victories and their tragic personal failures. It provides a non-fiction look at humanity, with God still working in the midst of peoples’ frailty.

The element of Bible prophecy has also been convincing to many people. The Old Testament of the Bible predicts numerous events that came to pass centuries later. Many of these have to do with the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Finally, the Bible has changed countless lives over the centuries. Numerous world leaders have looked to it for inspiration. Many people say that it speaks to them as no other book does, and it’s been translated into nearly every language known to man.

But don’t take our word for it. The best way to determine if the Bible is a book inspired by God is to read it for yourself. Don’t cast judgment on something you’ve rarely or never read.

If you’re new to the Bible, begin reading in the books of Luke or John, which are biographies of Jesus. Choose a contemporary version that uses modern English.
