DADS: LET'S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS

Fathers in Training provides encouragement
in a supportive environment.

The media often stereotypes dads as clueless, lazy oafs who are detached from their children’s lives.

The reality is, there is a bit of cluelessness in each of us. Often fathers don’t realize how little they know until it’s almost too late to do anything about it. But we don’t have to remain unchanged. Since we only get one chance to parent our children, we want to make the most of it.

This is where Fathers in Training (FIT) comes in.

“This class helps put God’s wisdom into everyday, practical, useable tools for a young father who needs all the help he can get,” said Stephen Losey, a FIT dad.

With material prepared by my wife Rita and myself, this class addresses all the major issues of being a dad who wants to raise children who love God above all else.

Young fathers were not the only ones who benefited from the 30 subjects covered during the course. Helping teens through the dating years is something that older dads highly appreciated. And it became clearer to everyone that building a good foundation into the lives of preschoolers makes all the difference in what happens during their teen years.

Gary McEwen, another FIT dad, said, “One of the best things I appreciated about the class was the biblical foundation it provided for the rest of parenting.”

Subjects include understanding the love languages of children, ideas for family times, training kids to obey, building God’s word into their lives, and being a team player with wives. No dad is a natural expert on all of these subjects.

FIT uses a discussion format, providing opportunity for all dads to ask questions and share experiences and perspectives.

“There was a lot of practical help for fathering,” Gary said, “and I got ideas I normally wouldn’t think of.”

Beginning in September, FIT class will be offered on two different mornings, from 6:30-7:45 a.m. Dads are free to leave earlier if needed and can choose to meet on Thursdays beginning  Sept. 4 or Saturdays beginning Sept. 6. According to the dads who have gone through FIT, the class is well worth the investment.
