True, there are some people who claim to be Christians who live their lives contrary to the teachings of Christ. Does this sad fact make Christianity invalid or untrue?
We regret that some Christians cause shame to the name of Christ. And we must admit that, even on our best days, we Christians fail to live up to the standard of perfection set by Jesus.
This argument, however, misunderstands what Christianity claims to be. Christianity does not claim to make perfect people.
The Bible tells us that Christianity can transform people and make them more like Christ. God wants to transform the character of every person. Some of us require more transformation than others. But God won’t force the transformation upon us. The Christian must be willing to be transformed by God.
Although Christ offers the power to transform our lives, we must give Him permission to make the changes.
Again, Christianity doesn’t claim to make people flawless. It simply claims that Christ can make someone better than they would have been without Him. Perfection is not promised. Progress is.
In addition, there are some phonies out there. If you saw a self-proclaimed vegetarian eating meat, you would not conclude that vegetarians are meat eaters. You would assume that the person was not a true vegetarian. There are some who claim to be followers of Jesus but are only imposters.
Finally, if you are truly concerned about morality and ethics, then you should give Christianity serious consideration. The Bible contains what many deem to be the noblest set of ethical teachings known to man. Jesus is thought by many to be the world’s greatest ethicist and philosopher. He took the ultimate stand for what He believed by giving up His life in a non-violent struggle against religious hypocrisy and human oppression.
If you believe that people should live moral and ethical lives, do not discount Christianity.
